Four-legged lawn lovers

Chuck a ball or lob a stick and they're happy!

Most dogs love getting some exercise in the garden or bonding with the two-legged members of the household.

If they're getting too hot, put the hose on them and then stand well clear before the rain dance begins.

Let's hear it for the humble lawn!

If ever there was a place made for kids, it's the Aussie backyard!

An oasis safe from busy streets and the chaos of everyday life, the lawn offers the perfect environment for our kids to exercise their bodies and their imaginations.

What better location to build a cubby? Instead of sitting inside playing video games or watching the idiot box, kids can create their own fantasy worlds and enjoy the freedom that play brings with neighbours and mates.

Kids back at school? Time to start laying

The kids are finally back at school after the spring holidays and you’re heaving a sigh of relief – until you look at your lawn, that is.

Your poor lawn has been used and abused and is now well and truly trashed, with bare patches, scuds cut out, toys all over it… you know the story.

Oasis Lawns enhancing Coral Cove’s streetscape

Talk with Alex Dodds and he will tell you, hands down, that he (and neighbour Ian) have the best lawns in the street!

But it’s no glib boast. Although Alex is a retired builder, he still has exacting standards.

And his most recent lawn triumph was not his first.

“We originally discovered Sir Walter buffalo grass when we lived in Calliope and had planted our 12-acre property from sprigs,” says Alex.

When Alex and his wife Kay retired and moved to Coral Cove the yard, he says, was in a terrible state.

The grass is always greener?

How a great lawn enhances curb appeal and adds value to your property

What is curb appeal and why does it matter?

It turns out that we take around three seconds or less to form our first impressions of people, and it seems the same might be true of houses.

We don’t need to go inside or study the finer details – just that first glance and we’ve already made up our mind.

When people buy a house some people decide within 20 seconds if this is going to be the one. The biggest purchase of our life decided in less time than it probably took for you to decide to read this article.

But why are first impressions actually important?

How having healthy lawn helps combat the ‘urban heat island’

We’re not going to get into the debate about how and why the world is getting warmer, it just is.

While this trend isn’t something the gardeners of the world can reverse at a global level, our suburban lawns can mitigate a phenomenon known as urban heat island.

Urban heat island is the reason built-up, higher-populated areas are warmer than more rural, less inhabited ones.

Ian’s perfect grassy yard a reality

When we spoke with Coral Cove homeowner Ian Hayne, he’d started his day with a round of golf, so we reckon he knows a thing or two about enjoying the perfect lawn.

Ian recently built a new home and polished off the job by getting his turf grass from Oasis Lawns in Childers.

“We’d been here for 10 years,” says Ian. “When we had the opportunity to build again, I decided to do the lawn right and without the weeds.”

Preparing for your new Oasis Lawn

The preparation of your new lawn is just as important as the installation, and crucial to its success.

Always spray the area with a weed killer to remove any weeds, vegetation or an existing lawn. And remember to always follow the instructions.

Homeowners say thanks to the experts

Just regular homeowners, with dream lawns – all thanks to Oasis Lawns!

It comes as no surprise that most homeowners want their back and front gardens to look incredible, especially as we near Christmas.

Making a smart decision to get a landscaper on board helps you to make choices about the design and layout of your property and the best sorts of plants to choose.

With a key part being the type of grass you lay, that is where Oasis Lawns comes in, with Jeremy Turner offering expert advice.

Make the most of Spring to establish your new lawn

Did you know that an average-sized block with town water can still install turf lawn when the weather is dry?

How so?

They key is to staging your new lawn’s installation, one area or segment at a time, to give it the best chance of flourishing.

Once a new lawn has been laid, it typically takes a month of watering morning and afternoon to establish properly.

Spring is the perfect time of year to do that before our gardens are subjected to the full summer weather of January and December.

And, if you lay your lawn now, you still have a month to get it established before the Christmas school holidays.

Gardening and lawn care tips from the pros

The Abbotsford Convent is just four kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD, and is made up of historic buildings and gardens.

It is adjacent to the Yarra River and Yarra Bend Park.

Aside from the stunning and peaceful gardens, the convent is home to studios and offices for small businesses, a radio station, four eateries, an open air cinema, food and craft markets, two galleries, an extensive program of events and venues for rehearsals, performances, classes, workshops and conferences.

Marg Allen and Joanne (Jo) Beescher are two part time gardeners who oversee all the maintenance of the grounds at the convent.

They also have eight regular volunteers that come in every week or month to help out, in addition to groups of corporate volunteers.

Marg says a lot of the big companies like Deloitte and PwC give their staff a day or two a year to do volunteer work somewhere and a lot of the staff choose to go to the convent, which is a huge help.

Garden lawn experts agree beautiful lawns add value

Aussie lawns aren’t just a pretty face, according to a poll by garden and lawn experts, Victa.

Indeed, most Australians believe that a blanket of green adds value to their home. Not only that, but many of us understand that lawns have major environmental benefits.

The Victa Lawn Care Survey asked Aussies all about their lawns – what they use their lawns for, what the best thing is about their lawn, what they know about lawns, and how they maintain them. And the survey provided some interesting insights.
