Oasis Lawns Blog

We like this one article only because we're suckers for a good grass story plus Marg resonates with not only us at Oasis Lawns but probably plenty of frustrated gardeners with her advice i.e. just get out there and weed. Story of our lives most weekends.

After another hot summer, we welcome the relief of the cooler nights.

Your lawn will be breathing a sigh of relief too, as summer can be long and stressful, particularly with the extreme weather conditions experienced in parts of Queensland in the past few months.

After laying your new Oasis Lawn, your first mow is a special moment and should take place as soon as your new lawn needs it, generally 1-3 weeks after installation.

All you need to do is just take the tips off and, remember whenever you’re mowing, never take off more than a third of the leaf blade.

Mowing can take place every 2-5 weeks during autumn and winter.

Autumn is ideal for raising your mowing height, particularly in shaded areas.  At a very minimum mowing height is best kept to 40MM to 60MM throughout the year, even up to 60MM to 70MM in heavily shaded areas. This provides a greater leaf surface area for your lawn for photosynthesis so that it can produce much needed sugars essential for its general health.

If weeds appear, mow them off to prevent them from going to seed!

Any type of mower is suitable for the Oasis Lawns three grass varieties, as long as your mower blades are sharp. Mowing at a higher blade level improves your lawn’s drought tolerance and leaf softness, as well as shade out weeds and keep the soil cooler, in turn, saving you water.

And always remember, never mow your new Oasis Lawn too low – about 50MM is ideal.

Keeping a bit of extra length will be beneficial come winter, as the leaf blades tend to become less frost effected with only the very tips browning off, leaving green undergrowth beneath.
